An (incomplete) list of common terms related to diversity in STEM. Many GEODES events focus on raising awareness about one or more of these, and providing strategies to address them.

the tendency to subjectively interpret new evidence as supporting one's existing beliefs or theories

bias in judgment or behavior resulting from conscious attitudes and beliefs about a person or group

a student's belief that their abilities, talent, and intelligence are fixed traits

a student's belief that their abilities are not fixed traits, and can be developed through hard work
​
bias in judgment or behavior resulting from unconscious attitudes and beliefs about a person or group
​
feeling that you are a "fraud" and somehow less qualified or deserving of success than your peers
​
a metaphor for the observation that at each STEM career stage, more women than men leave academia
​
being at risk of confirming a negative stereotype about one's social group
