About Us
GEODES was founded in 2015 by a team of graduate students in the Earth and Planetary Sciences department at UC Santa Cruz. Other cohorts have since continued the work and run GEODES to continue serving the department and broader community. The main goals of GEODES are to:
-
Provide a safe space that fosters community and mutual support across all career stages in the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department
-
Raise awareness of issues that limit minority participation and success in Earth science and provide strategies to meaningfully address these issues
-
Facilitate professional development opportunities for Earth science students
We work toward these goals by holding social/networking functions, interactive discussions, guest lectures, and workshops. Anyone is welcome to attend our events!

GEODES was awarded the Chancellor's Achievement Award for Diversity in June 2016. This award honors programs that have made outstanding contributions to furthering diversity, inclusion and excellence at UC Santa Cruz.
